Borrowed from Classical Persian آذَرْبَایْجَان (āzarbāyjān), Arabized form of Early New Persian آذَرْبَایْگَان (āḏārbāygān) / آذَرْبَادْگَان (āḏarbādgān), from Middle Persian ʾtwrpʾtkʾn / ʾtwrpʾtkn (Ādurbādagān), named after Atropates, the founder of the kingdom of Atropatene.
