Etymology[edit]

From Persian آذربایجان(âzarbâyjân), from Arabic أَذَرْبَيْجَان(ʾaḏarbayjān), from Classical Persian آذربایگان(âðarbâyegân), آذربادگان(âðarbâdgân), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾtwrpʾtkʾn), [script needed] (ʾtwrpʾtkn /Ādurbādagān/), from the name of Atropates, the Persian nobleman who founded the independent kingdom of Atropatene, from Old Persian 𐎠𐎬𐎼𐎱𐎫 (a-tu-r-p-t /Āturpat/, protected by fire). For the suffix see -ական (-akan), گان(gân). Compare Old Armenian Ատրպատական (Atrpatakan), Ատրապատական (Atrapatakan), Ատրպայական (Atrpayakan), Armenian Ադրբեջան (Adrbeǰan), Byzantine Greek Ἀδαρβιγάνων (Adarbigánōn), Classical Syriac ܐܕܘܪܒܝܓܐܢ(ʾĀḏōrbêḡān), Coptic ⲁⲇⲟⲩⲣⲃⲁⲇⲁⲅⲁⲛ (adourbadagan).
