Myanmar
English
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed, initially into British English, from Burmese မြန်မာ (mranma), the formal Burmese name of the main ethnic group in Myanmar; ဗမာ (ba.ma), from which Burma is derived, is the informal name. Both Burmese terms are also adjectives meaning "Burmese" (related to Myanmar/Burma, its, people, language, etc). Like in the word Burma, the r was not originally pronounced (and is not present in the Burmese term), it is a vowel-lengthening device used by non-rhotic (British) dialects; compare gorm.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (General American) IPA(key): /ˈmjɑnˌmɑɹ/, /ˌmjɑnˈmɑɹ/, /ˈmjænˌmɑɹ/
- (Received Pronunciation) IPA(key): /mjænˈmɑː/, /ˈmjæn.mɑː/, /ˈmaɪ̯ænˌmɑː/
- Rhymes: -ɑː(ɹ)
Proper noun

- 2025 July 18, Timothy McLaughlin, “A Rebel Army Is Building a Rare-Earth Empire on China's Border. The Kachin Independence Organization fought for decades in obscurity. Now it's supplying essential minerals to manufacturers around the world”, in Bloomberg Businessweek[1], archived from the original on 18 July 2025:
- The watchdog group Global Witness recently found that Chinese companies with links to Myanmar rare-earth supplies have listed as customers Ford Motor, Hyundai Motor, Siemens, Tesla, Vestas Wind Systems, Volkswagen and others.

Adjective
[edit]Myanmar (not comparable)
- Of or relating to Myanmar, Burmese.
- Synonyms: Burmese, Myanma
- Myanmar harp
Usage notes
[edit]- Burma is a traditional name of Myanmar, and was the official name in English until 1989. It is still used to express disapproval of the military government, which changed the name. See Names of Myanmar on Wikipedia.
- Though Myanma is also an derived adjective of Myanmar, the current government has shown more favour in using the unchanged term "Myanmar" rather than "Myanma".
