From Middle English Iseland, Island, Islond, Yslond, a calque of Icelandic Ísland, equivalent to ice +‎ land. Debated theories by writers such as Einar Pálsson link the ultimate etymology of the prefix to Jesus (Icelandic Jesús), or the Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis.
