    Ultimately derived from Arabic أَذَرْبَيْجَان (ʔaḏarbayjān), from Classical Persian آذربایجان (āḏarbāyjān), from Early New Persian آذربایگان (āḏarbāygān), آذربادگان (āḏarbādgān), from Middle Persian ʾtwrpʾtkʾn (/⁠ādurbādagān⁠/), from the name of Atropates, the founder of the kingdom of Atropatene, from Old Persian *Ātr̥pātah (/⁠Āturpat⁠/, protected by fire).
