Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Arabic أَهْوَاز (ʔahwāz), a shortened form of سُوق الْأَهْوَاز (sūq al-ʔahwāz), a calque of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Persian Hūǰestān-wāzār (literally the market of Khuzestan), name of a major town in Sassanian-era. The word is the broken-plural form of Middle Persian hwc (Hūz).
