Etymology

[edit]

From Arabic أَهْوَاز (ʔahwāz), a shortened form of سُوق الْأَهْوَاز (sūq al-ʔahwāz), a partial-calque of Middle Persian Hūǰestān-wāzār (literally the market of Khuzestan), name of a major town in Sassanian-era. The word is the broken-plural form of Middle Persian hwc (Hūz). Related to هویزه (hoveyze) and خوزستان (xuzestân); see there for more.
