From the root ب ء س (b-ʔ-s); compare بَئِسَ (baʔisa, to be miserable, to be wretched), بَؤُسَ (baʔusa, to be strong, to be brave).

بَئِيس (baʔīs) (feminine بَئِيسَة (baʔīsa), masculine plural بَئِيسُون (baʔīsūn) or بُؤَسَاء (buʔasāʔ), feminine plural بَئِيسَات (baʔīsāt), elative أَبْأَس (ʔabʔas))
