Etymology[edit]
From Arabic, from the root ب ق ل (b-q-l). Related to بَقْل (baql, “vegetables, green plants, herbs”). Compare Andalusian Arabic رييس البقول (rayīs el-buqūl, “spinach”), Maltese bqajla (“spinach”).
