[edit]Etymology
[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *bödene, via a Turkic source. Compare Kazakh бөдене (bödene), Tatar бүдәнә (büdänä), Uyghur بودۇنە (bodune), Uzbek bedana, Turkmen bedene. Largely displaced Classical Persian وَرْتِیج (wartīj) in the eastern dialects of Persian, while the Turkic borrowing بلدرچین (belderčin) has displaced it in the western ones.
