Ultimately from Biblical Hebrew בֵּית לֶחֶם (bēṯ léḥem), likely via Aramaic [Term?], and matched to the native cognates بَيْت (bayt) +‎ لَحْم (laḥm), which makes it sound like a "house of meat". Believed to be related to the name of the god Lahamu or Lahmu.
