Etymology[edit]

Morphologically from تكیر (tekir, brindled, tabby) + طاغ (dağ, mountain), but this is just a corrupted form of the earlier name تكفور طاغی (Tekfur Dağı), from تكفور (tekfur, a Christian bey in Thrace) + طاغ (dağ, mountain). Before the 18ᵗʰ century this city was known as ردوسجق (rodoscuk).
