Derived from Arabic جَبَى (jabā, to collect, to levy) possibly through a noun signifying a type of extraordinary tax. Compare Semitic cognates: Hebrew גָּבָה (gāḇâ, to levy) and Classical Syriac ܓܒܐ (gəḇā, to levy).
