Etymology

Derived from Arabic جَبَى (jabā, “to collect, to levy”) possibly through a noun signifying a type of extraordinary tax. Compare Semitic cognates: Hebrew גָּבָה (gāḇâ, “to levy”) and Classical Syriac ܓܒܐ (gəḇā, “to levy”).
