From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hylyk' /hērīg/, “wallflower”). Compare Old Armenian հիրիկ (hirik), հիր (hir), Classical Syriac ܟܝܪܝܓ (ḵīrīg), ܟܝܪܝ (ḵīrī), and ܟܝܪܘܓ (ḵīrūg) corresponding to the خیرو (xiru) variant, Arabic خَيْرِيّ (ḵayriyy), Iranian borrowings.
