From Classical Syriac ܕܝܩܘܕܐ, ܕܝܐܩܘܕܐ (diyāqōḏā), from Byzantine Greek διὰ κωδυῶν (dià kōduôn), διακώδιον (diakṓdion), where κωδύα (kōdúa), κώδεια (kṓdeia), κώδυον (kṓduon) is the Greek word for the poppyhead.
