Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀥𑀁𑀥 (dhaṃdha), from Sanskrit धन्ध (dhandha). Cognate to Gujarati ધંધો (dhandho), Marathi धंदा (dhandā), Bengali ধাঁধা (dhãdha).
