Inherited from Proto-Turkic *sipürge (broom), from the same root of سوپورمك (süpürmek, to sweep); cognate with Azerbaijani süpürgə, Bashkir һепертке (hepertke), Kazakh сыпырғыш (sypyrğyş), Kyrgyz шыпыргы (şıpırgı), Turkmen süpürgi, Uyghur سۈپۈرگە (süpürge) and Uzbek supurgi.
