From Ottoman Turkish چویرمه(çevirme, spinning, rotating), verbal noun of چویرمك(çevirmek, to turn over), related to Old Turkic [script needed] (çevür-, to turn); compare Greek γύρος (gýros, gyro, literally revolving around) and Turkish döner kebap (shawarma, gyro, literally turning roast meat).
