شرشير
Arabic
Etymology
From the bright blue-grey cap of a male شُرْشُور (šuršūr, “chaffinch”), likely applied to this bird by semantic comparison to English teal. Alternatively, for its similar largely granivorous diet in winter seasons comparable to the notable habit of chaffinches; see شُرْشُور (šuršūr).
