Etymology

From شَرْمَطَ (šarmaṭa, to shred). Most Semitists agree that it is of non-Semitic origin; perhaps from Middle Persian clm (charm, a piece of skin, hide, or leather), perhaps conflated with Middle Persian šlm (šarm, shame). Compare Hebrew סְמַרְטוּט (s'martút, rag), Aramaic מַרְטוּטָא (marṭūṭā), סְמַרְטוּטָא (səmarṭūṭā, coarse garment).
