شرموطة
Arabic
Alternative forms
- شَرْطُوطَة (šarṭūṭa)
Etymology
From شَرْمَطَ (šarmaṭa, “to shred”). Most Semitists agree that it is of non-Semitic origin; perhaps from Middle Persian clm (charm, “a piece of skin, hide, or leather”), perhaps conflated with Middle Persian šlm (šarm, “shame”). Compare Hebrew סְמַרְטוּט (s'martút, “rag”), Aramaic מַרְטוּטָא (marṭūṭā), סְמַרְטוּטָא (səmarṭūṭā, “coarse garment”).
