Etymology

Suggested from the verb reconstructed in Proto-Balto-Slavic *mezgti (to twist, to weave, to sew, to entangle etc.) by Latvian mežģīt, Lithuanian mègzti and Proto-Slavic *mězgyrь (tarantula), Proto-Germanic *maskwǭ (loop, knot; mesh). See also Old Armenian մաղ (mał, sieve).
