Derived from the passive participle of رَبَّعَ (rabbaʕa, to quadruple), from the root ر ب ع (r-b-ʕ); compare أَرْبَعَة (ʔarbaʕa, four). Cognate with Aramaic מְרַבַע/ܡܪܒܥ (mrabbaˁ, mrubbaˁ, square).
