[edit]First attested in c. 1534 as Middle Hindi ملیامیٹ (mlyamyṭ /mlyāmyṭ/), from ملی (milī, “found”) + ا (ā) + میٹ، میٹا/مٹانا (meṭ, meṭā, miṭānā, “erased”). Unrelated to English eliminate or annihilate. Compare Punjabi مِلِیامیٹ (milīyāmeṭ).
