Etymology

From Middle Persian 𐭢𐭥𐭫𐭢𐭠𐭭 (Gurgān), from Old Persian 𐎺𐎼𐎣𐎠𐎴 (Varkāna), from Proto-Iranian *wr̥kāna- (compare Avestan 𐬬𐬆𐬵𐬭𐬐𐬁𐬥𐬀 (Vəhrkāna)).

Equivalent to گرگ (gorg, wolf) + suffix.

Borrowed into (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek as Ὑρκᾱνίᾱ (Hurkāníā).
