ܒ ܥ ܛ (b ˁ ṭ) |
1 term |
From the older form ܒܵܥܸܛ (bāˁiṭ), from Aramaic [Term?], with the /ṭ/, shifting to /č̣/ as observed in many words. Compare Classical Syriac ܒܥܲܛ (“to kick, trample”). The meaning developed from that flattening is what often happens when something is trampled.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (Standard) IPA(key): [baːʕɪt͡ʃˤ]
- (Nineveh Plains) IPA(key): [bˤaʕɪt͡ʃˤ]
Verb
[edit]ܒܵܥܸܟ̰ • (bāˁič) (present participle ܒܥܵܟ̰ܵܐ (bˁāčā), past participle ܒܥܝܼܟ̰ܵܐ (bˁīčā))
- (intransitive, transitive) to squeeze flat, flatten (not necessarily fully)
