Sogdian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From [script needed] (*δast-partar), a compound of ܕܣܛ (δst /*δast-/, “hand”), on which see دست (dast), and [script needed] (prtr- /*partar-/, “to dry up, wipe off”), the latter ultimately composed of the Proto-Iranian preverb *pari- and the verbal root *tarH- (“to rub, wipe (?)”) from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (“to rub”).
