Sogdian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From [script needed] (*δast-partar), a compound of ܕܣܛ (δst /⁠*δast-⁠/, hand), on which see دست (dast), and [script needed] (prtr- /⁠*partar-⁠/, to dry up, wipe off), the latter ultimately composed of the Proto-Iranian preverb *pari- and the verbal root *tarH- (to rub, wipe (?)) from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (to rub).
