From Aramaic אָוָוזָא (/ʾawazzā/), from Akkadian 𒊻𒄷 (/ūsu/, “duck”), from Sumerian 𒊻𒄷 (/uz/, “wild duck, waterfowl”), likely all onomatopoeic in origin. Compare Arabic إِوَزَّة (ʾiwazza(t)) and Hebrew אֲוָזָה (ʾăwāzâ).
