[edit]From the passive particle of ܥܲܘܸܩ (ˁawwiq, “to obstruct, impair, hinder”), from Arabic. Coined on the Classical Syriac passive participle forms. Compare Arabic مُعَوِّق (muʕawwiq, “disabled”).
