Partial calque of French grand-père; similar in Hebrew סַבָּא רַבָּא (sába rába) itself borrowed from Aramaic.

Usage notes[edit]
Additional instances of “ܪܲܒܵܐ (rabbā, “great”)” at the end can be prepended to the term, each indicating one further generation of ancestry. For large numbers of generations a number can be substituted, for example, “ܣܵܒ݂ܵܐ ܪܲܒܵܐ ܕܐܲܪܒܥܵܐ (“four-times-great-grandfather”)”
