Etymology

Derived from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀓𑁆𑀔𑁄𑀝 (akkhoṭa), from Sanskrit अक्षोट (akṣoṭa). The ख़ (xa) as opposed to the expected ख (kha) is a hyperforeignism. The medial -r- is also unexpected—some cognates like Gujarati અખરોટ (akharoṭ) have it, and others like Marathi अखोड (akhoḍ) do not. Compare also Sanskrit कोटि (koṭi) → Hindi करोड़ (karoṛ).
