Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀁𑀓 (aṃka), from Sanskrit अङ्क (aṅka, curve, hook, figure, number), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hankás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hankás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ónkos, from the root *h₂enk- (to curve, bend). Distant cognate with Ancient Greek ὄγκος (ónkos, curve, angle). Doublet of अंक (aṅk). Also related to आँकड़ा (ā̃kṛā), see there for more.
