From Sanskrit उन्दुर (undura) from a lost Vedic substrate language. Cognate with Marathi उंदीर (undīr), Gujarati ઉંદર (undar), Hindi इंदुर (indur), Bengali ইঁদুর (ĩdur), Assamese এন্দুৰ (endur), Sylheti ꠃꠘ꠆ꠖꠥꠞ (undur).
