Etymology
[edit]Of onomatopoeic origin, mimicking the male bird's mating cry. Compare Latin cucūlus, English cuckoo, Ancient Greek κόκκῡξ (kókkūx), Polish kukułka. Less likely from a Proto-Indo-European root *kewk-, connected to कौक (kauka, “owl; dog?”).
