Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑁄𑀇𑀮𑀸 (koilā, burning charcoal), from Sanskrit कोकिल (kokila, lighted coal; charcoal), of Munda origin. Despite strong phonetic and semantic similarities, unrelated to English coal, which comes from PIE *ǵwelH- (to burn, shine) (whence Hindi जलना (jalnā) ultimately derives).
