Inherited from Proto-New Indo-Aryan *गली (galī, “lane”), possibly from Sanskrit गति॑ (gáti, “going”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gátiš, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷḿ̥tis, from *gʷem- + *-tis. Cognate with Punjabi ਗਲੀ (galī) / گَلی (galī), Gujarati ગલી (galī), Sindhi ڳَليِ (g̠alyi) / ॻली, Marathi गल्ली (gallī), Bengali গলি (goli).
