Usually derived from चन्दति (candati, to shine), but probably a Dravidian borrowing: compare Tamil சாந்து (cāntu, Santalum tree), சாந்தம் (cāntam, sandalwood), Malayalam ചാന്ത് (cāntŭ, sandal paste).
