[edit]From चश्म (caśma, “eye”) + दीद (dīd, “sight”), ultimately from Classical Persian. Cognate with Sanskrit चक्ष्मदृष्ट (cakṣmadṛṣṭa, “eye-seen”). Compare Punjabi چشم دید / ਚਸ਼ਮਦੀਦ (caśmadīd).
