Etymology

[edit]

Of uncertain origin. Likely borrowed from Dravidian; compare Tamil சூடு (cūṭu, to be crowned, wear on one's head). Phonetic variation of its descendants and related words make a Munda origin possible as well.[1] An Indo-Iranian provenance is also possible, supported by the word's Vedic attestation; compare the second component (third and fourth syllables) of Avestan 𐬀𐬱𐬙𐬀𐬐𐬀𐬊𐬲𐬛𐬀 (ašta.kaožda-, a type of diadem).[2]
