Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian جیب (jēb), from Arabic جَيْب (jayb, pocket; opening in a garment). Compare Assamese জেপ (zep), Bengali জেব (jeb), Punjabi ਜੇਬ (jeb).

The word used to only refer to shirt pockets in Arabic, but as pockets have shifted to the lower body the Hindi terms has come to include those.
