Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Persian جیب(jeyb), from Arabic جَيْب(jayb, pocket; opening in a garment). The word used to only refer to shirt pockets in Arabic, but as pockets have shifted to the lower body the Hindi terms has come to include those.
