Etymology 1[edit]

The origin is unknown. A root ج ي ب(j-y-b) lacks otherwise except obvious derivations of this noun. Possibly from the root ج ب ب(j-b-b) whence also the known جُبَّة(jubba) garment. Also suggested to be from Aramaic, Classical Syriac ܓܰܝܒ݁ܳܐ(gaybā, temple, vaulted chamber) with peculiar semantic evolution or from unattested meanings, or Aramaic 𐡢𐡡𐡠(gbʾ) / גַּבָּא‎ / ܓܰܒܴ݁ܐ(gabbā, side, flank), if from this then doublet of جَنْب(janb), and جَوْف(jawf, cavity) is also compared.[1]
