From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hdánts, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hdánts (compare Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬥𐬙𐬀𐬥 (dantan), 𐬛𐬁𐬙𐬁 (dātā), Persian دندان (dandân)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃dónts (tooth) (compare Ancient Greek ὀδούς (odoús), ὀδών (odṓn), Latin dēns, Old English tōþ (whence English tooth)).
