Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰa(H)inúṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰa(H)inúš, a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)- (to suckle, nurse). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬎‎ (daēnu‎).
