From Proto-Indo-Aryan *nákts, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nákts, from Proto-Indo-European *nókʷts (night). Cognate with Ancient Greek νῠ́ξ (núx), Latin nox, Lithuanian naktis, Old English niht (whence English night).
