    Inherited from Sanskrit *नवकाष्ठ (navakāṣṭha, “new stick, new wood”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from नव (nava, “new”) +‎ काष्ठ (kāṣṭha, “stick, wood”).[1] Cognate with Maithili लवठा (lavᵊṭhā).
