From Proto-Indo-Aryan *pádyatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pádyati, from Proto-Indo-European *péd-ye-ti, from *ped- (“to walk”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬛𐬌𐬌𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬈 (paidiiāite).
