[edit]Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀺𑀮𑁆𑀮 (*pilla, “young of an animal”), from Dravidian. Compare Marathi पिल्लू (pillū), Konkani पिल्लू (pillū), Kannada ಪಿಳ್ಳೆ (piḷḷe), Telugu పిల్ల (pilla).
