[edit]Inherited from Middle Hindi پتلی (ptly /putlī/) (c. 1625),[1] from Old Hindi पुतरी (putarī), from Apabhramsa पुत्तलिय (puttaliya), from Prakrit पुत्तलिआ (puttaliā), from पुत्त (putta) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮- (-la-) + -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-).[2]. By surface analysis, पुतला (putlā) + -ई (-ī).
