Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *plu-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *plu-, from Proto-Indo-European *plew- (to fly, flow, run). Cognate with English flow, float, Ancient Greek πλέω (pléō), Old Armenian լուանամ (luanam) and Russian плыть (plytʹ) ("to swim", "to float").
