Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *plew- +‎ -ան- ‎(-an-).

Alternatively, of the same origin as լոգանամ ‎(loganam), Ancient Greek λούω ‎(loúō, to wash), Latin lavo.

լուանամ ‎(luanam)

  1. (transitive) to wash, to cleanse, to bathe; to rinse
    լուանալ զերես‎ ― luanal zeres ― to wash the face of; to wash one's face
    լուանամ զձեռս‎ ― luanam zjeṙs ― I wash my hands of it, I'll have nothing to do with it
    ջուրբ լուանալ‎ ― ǰurb luanal ― to inundate, to wash away, to destroy by floods
    աղիւս լուանալ‎ ― ałiws luanal ― to wash a blackamoor white, to lose one's labour
  2. (transitive, figuratively) to reproach, to scold
    լուանալ զոք թշնամանօք‎ ― luanal zokʿ tʿšnamanōkʿ ― to scold, to upbraid, to reprimand, to blow up
  3. (intransitive, in the mediopassive) to wash, to wash one's self; to bathe, to bathe one's self
