Etymology

[edit]

Traditionally analyzed as diminutive of *फिङ्ग (*phiṅga), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pingos (chaffinch). Compare Ancient Greek σπίγγος (spíngos, chaffinch), Russian пе́нка (pénka, wren), Welsh pinc (finch), German Fink, Old English finċ (English finch).[1]

Mayrhofer doubts the etymological relatedness to the above terms and analyzes as *फिङ्ग् (*phiṅg, to make a 'phiṅg' sound) +‎ -अक (-aka).[2] In any case ultimately onomatopoeic.
